    Surely what is key is to make clear to the reader as early as possible what the potential benefits are to them in reading the document?

    Liz, thanks for being a regular commenter. I appreciate it. I'm not sure I agree this time though.

    If those benefits are rational (information need for instance) then there is a pull to read but it's competing with a lot of other noisy rational demands.

    An emotional, subliminal pull is much more difficult to resist. It's the difference between the market stall holder who catches your eye and strikes up a conversation, and the guy who hides behind his 2 for 1 offers. If your reader is making a conscious decision about reading on, you've probably already lost them.
